He worked as a lithographer and used his skills to become a successful artist. He then changed his name, at age 27, to Fitz Henry Lane but until 2005 was erroneously known as Fitz Hugh Lane. WebDuring the summer of 1850, Fitz Henry Lane experienced his first summer cruise through the inlet off the coast of Maine known as Penobscot Bay. Near the end of the cruise, the artist and his friends encountered Somes Sound and the adjacent Mount Desert Island. While Lane’s party set up camp at Somes Settlement, he explored the nearby landscape.
